Two dogs walk the same fields, meet the same dogs, drink from the same puddles. One picks up everything going. The other has been to the vet twice in six years and both times it was a claw.
Some of that is luck and some of it is genetics. A meaningful proportion of it is happening in the intestines, which is where the majority of a dog’s immune system actually lives.
Where the immune system is
Not spread evenly through the body, as most people assume. It’s heavily concentrated around the gut.
Something in the order of seventy per cent of a dog’s immune tissue sits in and around the intestinal wall – a structure vets call gut-associated lymphoid tissue. That placement makes sense once you think about it: the digestive tract is the largest surface where the outside world meets the inside of the animal, far larger than the skin, and it’s where most pathogens attempt entry.
So the gut isn’t merely near the immune system. It’s where the immune system does most of its work, and the bacterial population living there is in constant conversation with it.
Which is the argument for treating gut health as ongoing maintenance rather than something you address when the stools go wrong. What the bacteria actually do for immunity
They train it. The immune system has to learn what’s dangerous and what isn’t. Constant low-level exposure to harmless resident bacteria is a substantial part of how it calibrates that judgement. A poorly calibrated immune system either misses threats or overreacts to harmless things, and the second of those is what allergy is.
They take up the space. Competitive exclusion – a well-populated gut has very little room, physically or nutritionally, for anything harmful to establish. Clear the residents out and there’s suddenly vacancy.
They maintain the barrier. The gut lining is a single cell thick in places. Butyrate, produced by bacteria fermenting fibre, is the primary fuel for those cells. A well-fed lining is an intact lining, and an intact lining keeps things where they belong.
They produce antimicrobial compounds that inhibit competitors directly.
They regulate inflammation, dialling immune responses up and down rather than leaving them permanently switched on.
What knocks it down
Antibiotics, more than anything else. They don’t distinguish, and the disruption outlasts the course by weeks.
Stress. Cortisol suppresses immune function directly and alters the gut population within days. Boarding, moving, fireworks, a new baby.
Poor diet, particularly one with essentially no fermentable fibre, which starves the population you’re relying on.
Age. Microbiome diversity declines in older dogs, alongside a general decline in immune responsiveness.
Illness itself, especially anything involving vomiting or diarrhoea, which physically flushes the population out.
Poor sleep. Under-appreciated. Adult dogs need twelve to sixteen hours and immune function suffers without it.
The boarding kennel triangle
A good illustration of all three systems interacting, and something most owners have witnessed.
A dog goes into kennels. He’s stressed, which raises cortisol and suppresses immune function. The stress alters his gut population within a couple of days. He’s simultaneously exposed to more respiratory pathogens than he’d meet in a month at home.
He comes back with kennel cough, or colitis, or both. And it’s genuinely not the kennel’s fault – the same dog put through a house move would often produce the same result.
Which is why preparation matters: a trial stay, his own food, familiar bedding, and gut support started a fortnight ahead rather than on the day.
Vaccination and gut health
A question that comes up and deserves a straight answer.
There’s reasonable evidence in several species that gut microbiome composition influences how well an animal responds to vaccination. It’s an active research area and it’s plausible in dogs.
What that does not mean is that gut supplements replace vaccination, or that a well-fed dog doesn’t need his boosters. Nobody credible is arguing that, and the diseases in question – parvovirus in particular – kill.
The sensible reading is that a dog in good general health, including gut health, is likely to mount a better response to a vaccine than one who isn’t. Which is an argument for both, not for choosing.
The hygiene question
Worth addressing, because the advice sounds contradictory.
Early-life exposure to a varied environment appears to support immune development. Puppies raised in busy households, with gardens, with other animals, with normal domestic mess, seem to fare better than those raised in sterile conditions. Farm-reared puppies come up in this research repeatedly.
That is not an argument for letting a puppy drink from puddles or meet unvaccinated dogs. Parvovirus doesn’t care about the hygiene hypothesis.
The practical version: a normal, varied, reasonably clean domestic environment during the socialisation window, with sensible precautions about disease. Not a bubble, and not a free-for-all.
Allergy is an immune problem
Which is why gut health keeps appearing in skin discussions.
Allergic disease is an immune system reacting to something harmless as though it were a threat – pollen, dust mite, a food protein. That’s a calibration failure, and calibration is partly a gut job.
Research on probiotics in canine atopic dermatitis is promising rather than conclusive, including work suggesting early-life supplementation may reduce the severity of later signs. It’s encouraging and it isn’t a cure, and anyone selling it as one is ahead of the evidence.
What actually helps, practically
Feed some fermentable fibre. Beet pulp, chicory inulin, a food that contains something for the bacteria to eat.
Support the population daily rather than in bursts, since probiotic bacteria are transient and don’t take up permanent residence.
Don’t use antibiotics unnecessarily. If your vet declines to prescribe for a routine upset, that’s the evidence rather than a fob-off.
Manage stress, particularly around known disruptions.
Protect sleep. A dog woken constantly isn’t recovering properly.
Keep him lean. Fat tissue is metabolically active and produces inflammatory signals; overweight dogs run in a mildly inflamed state permanently.
Keep parasite control current. A worm burden is an ongoing immune drain.
Puppies, and the window that matters
The first few months are when the immune system does most of its learning, and the gut is where a lot of that learning happens.
A puppy is born with a near-sterile gut. It’s colonised from the mother during and after birth, shifts again at weaning, and keeps developing through the first year. Colostrum in the first day delivers not just antibodies but compounds that actively encourage particular bacterial populations to establish.
That means early events cast a long shadow. A litter that had antibiotics at three weeks, or was raised somewhere with very little environmental variety, can start adult life with less microbial diversity than one raised in a busy household.
None of it is fixable retrospectively. It does explain why some dogs seem to have been more fragile from the day they arrived, and it’s a reasonable argument for supporting those dogs steadily rather than waiting for a problem to declare itself.
Older dogs, at the other end
Immune function declines with age and so does microbiome diversity, and the two are not unrelated.
Practically, an older dog takes longer to recover from things a young dog shrugs off. A gut upset that would cost a three-year-old a day costs a twelve-year-old most of a week. Wounds heal more slowly. Vaccine responses are less robust.
That isn’t a reason for gloom, and it is a reason to be more attentive. Twice-yearly check-ups rather than annual ones once he’s into double figures. Prompt attention to anything that would normally be watched for a couple of days. Steady daily support rather than reactive.
And weight matters more here than at any other stage, because fat tissue produces inflammatory signals and an old dog carrying extra weight is running with an immune system already dealing with a background hum.
What supplements can’t do
Worth being clear, because this is a category with a lot of overclaiming.
No supplement prevents infectious disease. No supplement replaces vaccination. No supplement fixes an immune system that’s genuinely malfunctioning – immunosuppression and autoimmune disease are veterinary problems requiring diagnosis and, usually, medication.
What gut support reliably does is improve digestion and stool quality, help the gut population recover from disruption, and provide steady maintenance for the tissue where most immune activity happens. That’s worth doing. It isn’t a shield.
When something is genuinely wrong
Some dogs really do get ill more than they should, and it’s worth distinguishing bad luck from a pattern.
Repeated infections in the same place – three ear infections in a year, recurrent skin infections, recurring urinary infections – usually means an underlying cause rather than three separate misfortunes. Allergy and dental disease are the two commonest culprits.
Persistent lethargy, unexplained weight loss, recurring fevers, swollen lymph nodes or wounds that heal slowly all warrant investigation rather than supplementation.
And a young dog who is repeatedly unwell deserves a proper work-up. Immune deficiencies are uncommon and they exist, and they’re not something to manage with a change of diet.
